I think I usually went before my period! It wasn't that I intentionally avoided it, but I remember always booking it that way.
Swelling and pain can be more sensitive during menstruation, so I was advised to inform the doctor of my cycle and medication in advance, and to schedule an appointment after my period has ended if possible.
Do not stop taking birth control pills or painkillers on your own; be sure to consult with a doctor.
Since bleeding, swelling, and pain can feel more sensitive during menstruation, I tried to avoid scheduling appointments for a week before and after my period if possible, and I found it helpful to inform the hospital in advance if I am taking birth control pills or painkillers.
